【略歴】
1976〜2020年まで、アイスランドの主要紙『モルガンブラディッド』のフォトジャーナリストを務め、その後はグリーンランド、アラスカ、シベリア、ラトビア、リトアニア、モザンビーク、南アフリカ、中国、ウクライナなど世界各地でフリーランスとして活動。アクセルソンの作品は、アイスランド国内外で広く展示されている。アイスランドのフォトジャーナリズムにまつわる賞を20以上受賞。ライカ・オスカー・バルナックアワード（2001年）では特別賞を受賞し、2020年には同賞の最終候補にも選ばれている。フランスのヴァンヌで開催されたFestival International de la Photo de Merではグランプリを受賞（2003年）し、写真集『Andlit Nordursins』（英語版、Face of the North刊）は2016年アイスランド文学賞ノンフィクション部門を受賞。彼の写真は『ライフ』、『ニューズウィーク』、『シュテルン』、『GEO』、『ナショナル・ジオグラフィック』、『タイム』、『Polka Magazine』などの雑誌でも紹介されている。これまで刊行した写真集は『Jokull（氷河）』（2018年）や近刊の『Arctic Heroes』（2020年）など、計8冊。アイスランド最高の栄誉であるファルコン勲章の、騎士十字章を受章している。

【Biography】
Axelsson was a photojournalist at Morgunbladid, the leading Icelandic newspaper (1976–2020), and has worked on freelance assignments around the world including Greenland, Alaska, Siberia, Latvia, Lithuania,Mozambique, South Africa, China and Ukraine. Axelsson’s work has been exhibited widely, both in Iceland and internationally. He has received more than twenty Icelandic photojournalism awards. He has received an honourable mention in the Leica Oskar Barnack Award (2001) and has been shortlisted for the same prize (2020). He won the Grand Prix at Festival International de la Photo de Mer, Vannes, France (2003), and his book Andlit Nordursins (English edition, Face of the North) won the 2016 Icelandic Literary Prize for non-fiction. His photographs have been featured in Life, Newsweek, Stern, GEO, National Geographic, Time and Polka Magazine. Axelsson has published a total of eight books, including Jokull (Glacier) (2018) and, most recently, Arctic Heroes (2020). He is a recipient of the Knight’s Cross of the Order of the Falcon, Iceland’s highest honour.
